General Rule Regarding the Use of Notes in Events

One of the most asked questions at the Los Angeles County Science Olympiad is whether notes and other resources can be used in Science Olympiad events. The simple answer is yes, notes and resources are allowed in event competitions.

According to National Science Olympiad General Rule 1, "Actions and items (e.g., tools, notes, resources, supplies, electronics, etc.) are permitted, unless they are explicitly excluded in the rules, are unsafe, or violate the spirit of the problem."

However, when notes and resources are used, common sense should apply. The notes or resources should not disturb stations that are set up or in some way interfere with the event. Space is often limited and space to open and use a binder, notebooks, or other notes is not guaranteed.

If the notes or other resources are a disturbance, the event supervisor may ask the students to put them away.
